A plane gathering data for the US National Hurricane Centre flew through the eye of Hurricane Irma.

Irma is a Category 5 storm which has wind speeds of up to 185 mph. It is the most powerful Atlantic storm ever recorded, according to the US National Weather Service.

The dramatic video shows the severity of the winds.

Officials warned people to seek protection from Irma's "onslaught" in a statement that closed with: "May God protect us all."

Evacuation orders have been issued for parts of the Caribbean. Florida has also declared a state of emergency over fears Irma could hit the state by the weekend.
